Schönberg: Romantic of the modern age
"I am a conservative, I preserve progress", Arnold Schönberg is said to have once said. As contradictory as the statement sounds, it is true. In retrospect, the name Arnold Schönberg is often equated with atonality and twelve-tone music - but the composer's path there led him through Romanticism. Schönberg sought modern elements in Romanticism, which he was able to transform and continue. He also studied and arranged works by Franz Schubert.

Pianist Julius Drake conjures up "myriad moods"
The NDR Vokalensemble under the direction of its chief conductor Klaas Stok now brings Schubert and Schönberg together. Both composers wrote wonderful works for the voice, often infused with subtle humor. Such as Schubert's "Ständchen D. 920", in which the soloist hesitantly creeps quietly to her sweetheart at night - in the original version with an entire male choir attached. I wonder if the sweetheart dares to come to the window with such concentrated masculinity? For the subtle interpretation, the NDR Vokalensemble has a master of his trade at its side; The Times wrote about the British pianist and sought-after accompanist Julius Drake: "Drake conjured up myriad pianistic moods with a masterful touch."
