From tomatoes to books: in 1975, 50 years ago, the first women's bookstore was founded in Germany: Lillemor's in Munich; two weeks later, Labrys opened in Berlin - and then things continued at a rapid pace in many other cities. The first German women's publishing houses were founded at almost the same time. In the course of the second women's movement, triggered by a famous tomato throw, children's stores, women's shelters, women's health centers, women's bands and theater groups, women's cafés and an entire women's book movement gradually emerged.

Doris Hermanns tells the story of this women's book movement from its beginnings to the present day and makes it clear how diverse and international it was and is from the very beginning. She portrays the three oldest German women's publishers - and gives an exciting insight into other women's/lesbian publishers in numerous countries. It is about feminist book fairs in London, Oslo, Montreal, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Melbourne; about women's book weeks, review magazines, women's literature prizes and much more to make women authors and their works visible... and about everything that has emerged from the autonomous women's movement in connection with the "women's book movement".

DORIS HERMANNS, born in 1961 near Aachen, works as an author, publicist, editor and translator; has published numerous portraits on www.fembio.org. She wrote the biography "Meerkatzen, Meißel und das Mädchen Manuela" about Christa Winsloe (AvivA Verlag, 2012) and edited works by Ruth Landshoff-Yorck and Hertha von Gebhardt, among others. Her book "Und alles ist hier fremd" (2022) deals with German-speaking women writers in British exile. Awarded "BookWoman of the Year" in 2021.
