"Every closed room is a coffin"
-- Blumfeld: Amplifier, 1994
Space is a mystery to us. With countless definitions, its meaning lies just as much in expansiveness and openness as in narrowness and closure. Metaphorical coffins permeate our everyday lives, be they physical, social or mental spaces, and provoke a critical debate that opens up the dimension of free space: Isolation, limitation and closure - as well as curtailment - appear from an artistic perspective alongside community, development and freedom. They are linked to the significance of Haus Schwarzenberg as a free space for artistic expression - the solution to the riddle: art needs (free) space!
This is the credo of this year's Salon Schwarzenberg, which also marks the start of our 30th anniversary and a whole year of events! The exhibition shows new works by the artists
artists based at Haus Schwarzenberg and invites you to reflect on the significance of closed and open spaces in the context of art, society and history.
How do closed spaces influence our freedom, identity and creativity? And vice versa:
What value do openness, independence and freedom have for artistic creation? What role does Haus Schwarzenberg, which has been an independent socio-cultural center for 30 years, play both in a world that is often perceived as constricting and within an artistic and cultural landscape in which the preservation and existence of open spaces is not a matter of course?
The exhibition aims to sensitize visitors to the often invisible limitations in their own lives and everyday life and to illustrate the value of open spaces. Salon Schwarzenberg not only celebrates the 30th anniversary of the building, but also invites critical reflection. This includes positions and perspectives of solidarity for repressed spaces as well as the importance of open spaces for the future: courageous and encouraging perspectives for the independent scene, synergies and the importance of resistance against limitations and for development.
The artists will transform the Neurotitan into a multifaceted reflection of (free) space, using video installation, metal sculpture, painting, screen printing, installation and photography to look at areas such as space and illusion, freedom and development, boundaries and personal freedom, resistance and fields of possibility as well as safe spaces. Ultimately, they open doors - into the inner free spaces of creative power, their output itself becomes an amplifier: "Do you notice what I notice / When I amplify the output?", Blumfeld continues. We: Art needs (free) space!
