Richard Siegal
Lunar Cycle
March 14 - April 13, 2025
From March 14, Museum Folkwang presents the performative dance installation Lunar Cycle by renowned US choreographer Richard Siegal. The long-term performance takes place over the course of a 29.5-day lunar phase cycle and invites visitors to reflect on the impact of human activity on the environment and to actively participate. During Lunar Cycle, the museum's large exhibition hall is transformed into a unique performative spatial installation for several hours every Thursday to Sunday, making weather phenomena and climate change a visual, acoustic and physical experience. Visitors can move freely through the space between the performers and the atmospheric elements.
International dancers from the Folkwang Tanzstudio, the Folkwang University of the Arts and the Ballet of Difference company founded by Richard Siegal will perform the choreography live. The Cologne-based Ensemble Musikfabrik and electronics pioneer Kurt "Pyrolator" Dahlke will enrich Lunar Cycle musically and acoustically. Siegal is also developing parts of the choreography with amateurs who will support the performance. An open call for participants for the performances at Museum Folkwang will begin in January 2025.
Highlight: The opening on March 14, 2025 will be celebrated with a 24-hour long durational performance starting at 6 pm.
The project is supported by the Kunststiftung NRW, the E.ON Foundation, Kulturstiftung Essen, the Pott Foundation and the Friends of the Ballet of Difference.
