From summer 2025, the Hamburger Kunsthalle will be presenting a major exhibition to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of Surrealism and based on a pair of paintings from the Kunsthalle that are being thematized for the first time. With Rendezvous of Dreams , over 180 Surrealist icons by Max Ernst, Meret Oppenheim, René Magritte, Salvador Dalí, Valentine Hugo, Toyen, André Masson, Victor Brauner, Paul Klee and many others will meet over 60 Romantic masterpieces by Caspar David Friedrich and Philipp Otto Runge, among others, in explicit homages and inspiring juxtapositions. After all, one of the most important intellectual affinities of international surrealism was with German Romanticism. Their fascination with dream worlds, nocturnal aspects, the microcosm and macrocosm and a special feeling for nature were among the sources of inspiration that Surrealism adopted a century later. Alongside Romantic poets such as Novalis, Achim and Bettine v. Arnim, Heinrich v. Kleist and Karoline v. Günderrode, Friedrich and Runge played an important role in the search for revolutionary art in the 20th century.
A total of around 250 paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures and objects by 55 Surrealists and 25 Romantics are brought together, world-famous works, some of which have never been presented before, from over 70 private and public collections from the USA, Mexico and all over Europe, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art; MoMA New York; Tate London; Kunsthalle Prague; Kunsthaus Zürich and many more, as well as from the museum's own collection.
