But "Carmen" is more than just catchy music. She is a feminist icon, long before the term existed. Carmen is self-determined, freedom-loving and plays by her own rules - which is both inspiring and challenging. She has no regard for social expectations, lives in the moment and makes decisions based on her gut. This woman is an absolute force of nature! Courageous, fearless, passionate - and with a tragic destiny.

What is "Carmen" about?

Carmen is a woman who is subordinate to nothing and no one. She loves life and lives it without compromise. When she falls in love, she does so with full intensity - but only for the moment. Loyalty? Commitments? Rules? Not her thing! And that's exactly what becomes her downfall.

Because Don José, who falls head over heels for her, cannot accept this unconditional freedom. His pathological jealousy and his desire to possess Carmen drive him to a dramatic finale. A story about love, passion and the ultimate desire for freedom - highly emotional and absolutely timeless.

Fun fact: the opera is based on a true story! The writer Prosper Mérimée heard about a real murder case on a trip to Spain - and turned it into a literary sensation, which Georges Bizet later turned into his immortal opera. Unfortunately, Bizet did not live to see the worldwide success of his work: he died just three months after the premiere.
