Awarded the German Youth Literature Prize 2023, non-fiction category

As soon as we see the light of day, we end up in a drawer: It's a boy! Or: a girl! Why is that? And how do all those who can't identify with the gender on their birth certificate feel? How do they react when their best friend's crush is not male but female? This book sheds light on LGBTIQA+ and the people behind these letters. It deals with social, health and legal issues, allows those affected to have their say and introduces organizations that are committed to gender diversity.

Kathrin Köller [she/her] believes that a society of diversity is not only possible, but necessary. She believes that sensitivity, respect and a change of perspective are a few good ingredients for this. She tries to live them. Also in her work as an author and translator for children's and youth media. Her home is Berlin.

Irmela Schautz [she/her] loves topics that are challenging in terms of content and illustration. When she can really devote herself to research and then come up with creative solutions, she is completely in her element. The freelance illustrator studied painting, graphic design and stage and costume design. She has been teaching at the Academy for Illustration and Design in Berlin since 2012.
