QUEER CLIMATE SHORTS

In the organizer's words:

The climate crisis disproportionately affects marginalized groups. People in the Global South and indigenous peoples are already the most vulnerable to droughts, floods and rising sea levels. At the same time, queer people are at the forefront of the movement for climate justice. These five short films showcase global queer approaches to climate justice, from throat singing to child birth and direct action to connecting with the land and ancestors.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with Bildung für utopischen Wandel e.V. about queer climate justice.

ENG: The climate crisis affects marginalized groups disproportionately. Today, People in the Global South and indigenous people already face the biggest threats to their life because of droughts, floods and rising sea levels. At the same time, queer people are at the forefront of the climate justice movement. These five short films show global queer approaches to climate injustice, from throat singing, having a baby, direct action to connecting with land and ancestors.

The screening will be followed by a talk with Bildung für utopischen Wandel about queer climate justice.

TJ Cuthand's work combines the extraction of resources with the booming fertility industry. As the filmmaker reflects on her life and the impact of the industry on herself, she also explores the harvesting and freezing of her own eggs in order to conceive an Indigenous child.

ENG: This film parallels resource extraction with the booming child apprehension industry. As the filmmaker reviews her life and how these industries have affected her, she also reflects on having her own eggs retrieved and frozen to make an Indigenous baby. (English with English Subtitles)

REBELS WITH A CAUSE

FIN 2022, Director: Mikka Poutiainen, 30 min, OmeU (Finnish with English subtitles)

Sanni, a civil disobedience campaigner, has given up her job to save the world from a climate catastrophe. Eltti combines queer and environmental activism in a quick-witted way and uses this as fuel for her performances.

In the Colombian Caribbean, a group of queer activists practice radical extravagant performances that challenge hetero-patriarchal norms and fight against various social injustices that plague the region. When the management of the country's largest coal mine announces a press conference to push for mining development, the group prepares for a denunciatory, performative action... and is decidedly queer in the process.
