The string quartet PULSE & percussionist Tilo Weber present their ongoing collaboration since 2023 with grounded.
PULSE is a progressive string quartet from Bremen. We let new musical ideas flow freely across all genres and borders. In collaborations and with the use of live electronics, we open up worlds of sound that would otherwise be inaccessible to a string quartet.
In grounded we present our collaboration with the exceptional musician, drummer, composer and winner of the German Jazz Award Tilo Weber: a program with rhythmically gripping and emotionally profound music. In 2023, PULSE worked with Tilo for the first time and commissioned 3 compositions. We are now playing one of them for the first time!
Tilo Weber has created emotional, dense, atmospheric and narrative music in his compositions. It is often intimate and personal, but can also break out and is always surprising. Open parts alternate with precisely notated gnawa rhythms, motifs wander through the voices in repetitions that are like a forest
The music of grounded is rhythmically grounded and can therefore be experienced physically - all composers stand for the integration of traditional percussion techniques. However, the music is also directly related to planet earth, its resources, the sonification of its forms and a sonic environmental awareness. The composers Susie Ibarra and Gabriella Smith, both known as unconventional, original composers but also as advocates for climate protection, are particularly representative of this.
The concert will take place in a stage design by Mirsad Herenda. His trees, made of iron, are also extremely grounded, but at the same time take to the air, the very space in which music exists.
Program:
Gabriella Smith: Carrot Revolution (2015)
Susie Ibarra: Pulsation (2018)
Tilo Weber: Rainbows (2023)
Tilo Weber: They lived and laughed and loved and left (2023)
Tilo Weber: False Memory (2023, world premiere)
