The ocean. Endless expanses, blue waves, shimmering waves. Almost all composers have been inspired by it at some point. However, this concert does not feature gently lapping beach club sounds, but goes all out. The Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu made a statement against whaling with "Toward the Sea" in 1981, commissioned by Greenpeace and inspired by "Moby Dick". Another sea monster is Leviathan, in this case from Jewish mythology. The New Zealand-Greek composer John Psathas used the figure for a spectacular percussion concerto for the drumming bundle of energy Alexei Gerassimez - and at the same time as a reminder of climate change, on the initiative of the UN. Anna Clyne, on the other hand, sees the sea as a metaphor for the feminine. She wrote her gripping piece "Restless Oceans" for an all-female orchestra; it was premiered at the opening of the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2019. One of her idols is probably Amy Beach: Her "Gaelic Symphony" from 1894 is the first symphony by a female American composer and is reminiscent of Scottish and Irish folk music.
