Description:
Hermann, an officer, falls in love with the wealthy Lisa, but feels like a social outsider and sees no chance with her. His obsession with gambling makes him increasingly strange. He learns that Lisa's grandmother, the countess, knows the secret of three winning cards, which he wants to use to solve his problems. Hermann kills the countess to find out the secret, which horrifies Lisa and drives her away from him. Delirious, Hermann visits the casino and wins at first, but at the decisive game he turns over the wrong card and realizes that he is doomed. As he dies, Lisa appears to him as an angel of reconciliation.
