Three pianists, three completely different approaches to the instrument, three different musical journeys. An afternoon with the Düsseldorf pianists Tom Blankenberg and Thilo Schölpen and the Cologne pianist Voide // Piano music + talks

With his current program Opium, Düsseldorf-based pianist Thilo Schölpen explores the piano at the boundaries of new music, jazz, improv and pop. Pop-cultural musical trends such as noise or drone are the artistic stimuli for this project.

Since 2013, Düsseldorf-based sound designer and pianist Tom Blankenberg has been delighting his ever-growing international fan base with minimalist solo piano music, situated somewhere between classical, jazz, avant-garde, score and song. He composes music of condensed permeability. His threads of sound weave silence into music.

In his Voide project, Cologne-based composer Axel Schmidt spans an arc from a lyrical, melancholy basic tone to rhythmic condensation. His music focuses on the balance between space and closeness, distance and intimacy. He combines influences from minimal music, northern folk, contemporary classical music and ambient.

A real "piano-summit" on Sunday afternoon here with lots of piano music and conversation...
