Physicality in Character Work - Intensive Improv Workshop

Characters are the most important component of any story!

An often-used way to create a character instantly is to lead with their physicality - body language, way of walking, physical characteristics, way of speaking, voice, and other modalities. If you can quickly choose and put some or all of these into your body, this tends to quickly inspire everything else about who you are on stage.

This hands-on workshop focuses on character physicality, or so-called "outside-in" character creation, to bring diverse, compelling characters to life. We will take the technique to an extreme in order to be funny and cartoonish when performing for comedy, but then also tone it down in order to explore realistic, yet memorable personas we can use in grounded scenes.

If you have a tendency to "play yourself", i.e. your characters are indistinguishable from each other, this workshop is for you!

Level

Improvisers of all levels are welcome, and feedback will be tailored to where you’re at.

About the teacher

Edyta is an experienced improviser with over eight years of experience. Her improv adventure started in Warsaw, Poland, with Wigwam Impro Theater. After moving to Munich, she became a regular performer with The Blue Couch improv group, where she performs in longform shows. She also leads workshops at Rice Cookie Improv. In 2024, her love for improv and connecting with people led her to co-found Edge Improv Lab. The same year, she co-founded The Mind Meld, a platform that brings together English-speaking improv communities.

The price of the workshop is 60 EUR, or 48 EUR for students.

Important things to know

Please bring non-slip socks or ideally a second pair of shoes. We are not allowed to use our street shoes in the venue, and the floor can be slippery. We highly recommend comfortable clothes which allow for movement and possibly sitting on the floor.

We ask that you do not take photos or videos during the session.

The workshop is in English.

You may cancel for a full refund until one week before the start. Cancellation after that date is not possible.
