Perspektiven der Musikverlagsforschung

Why do we research music publishers? A lecture by Prof. Dr. Christoph Hust will use examples from the 18th to 20th centuries to present questions and methods that characterize this field of research. Publishers function as central nodes in musical life, connecting artistic and economic interests and mediating between them. This position at the interface of different social systems provides unique insights into the history of music. Current research also sheds light on the relevance of digital working methods and quantitative analysis approaches, their potentials and limitations. The lecture is largely based on the results of the DFG project of the HMT Leipzig and SLUB Dresden on the history of Leipzig music publishers in the 19th and 20th centuries.
