Peña is a group of people with a common interest who come together to celebrate their culture with music, dance and traditional food in a festive atmosphere. Tinkuy is a Runa Simi (Quechua) word for meeting, whose etymology goes back to the complementarity of different or opposing parts. Intikuren, a platform for intercultural dialogues between tables and cultures, proposes a moment to celebrate exchange and alliances in Abya Yala. Their first performative food offering for Rising from the Ashes is a gesture towards the Afro-Andean culture in Peru that allowed different traditions to exist inseparably within each other, preserving the original manifestations despite the fusion.
Intikuren's food offerings for Rising from the Ashes are rich with symbolism: manchapecho, a festive dish with many layers of flavors and textures served as carapulcra, a centuries-old stew prepared on hot stones that is now made with dehydrated potatoes, and sopa seca, the Afro-Peruvian appropriation of Italian pasta prepared with local spices. Chicha morada, a sweet purple corn infusion with fresh and dried spices, chilled and spritzed with citrus. A creamy dessert made from the Andean fruit lúcuma. Accompanying stories and a soundscape of Afro-Peruvian and Andean songs that tell of resistance, community, identity and festivals underline the importance of places such as the El Carmen district in Chincha, where important cultural encounters take place, including between well-known musicians and artists such as Máximo Damián Huamaní and Amador Ballumbrosio.
