Parzival grows up in the wilderness, isolated from the world by his mother Herzeloyde out of love. When he meets two knights one day, he wants to become one too. King Arthur decides who becomes a knight - so he must seek him out. So Parzival sets out into the world, full of advice from his mother, but he does not understand it and its laws. Full of wonder and naivety, he questions everything and everyone. Why do knights slay other knights? What is a father? And what are truth and boredom? When Parzival arrives at King Arthur's Round Table, no one takes him seriously. He is supposed to grow up and have adventures. So he kills the knight Ither to get his weapons and armor. And soon Parzival's path is lined with even more corpses and broken hearts. He is a good student and quickly learns everything that the cold and arbitrary world throws at him.
Swiss author Lukas Bärfuss wrote his PARZIVAL in 2010 as a commissioned work for the Staatstheater Hannover. In ten episodes, skilfully selected from the extensive verse epic, he sketches out for us, full of humor and touching tragedy, a seeker of meaning on a hero's journey who reveals many things about society on his bloody odyssey through it.
