ARTIST IN FOCUS: Wassily Kandinsky
As a painter and theorist, Wassily Kandinsky made a significant contribution to the abandonment of the object in the conventional sense. He is one of the pioneers of art in the last century.
Kandinsky (1866-1944) grew up in economically secure circumstances and in a comparatively liberal political atmosphere for 19th century Tsarist Russia. Kandinsky began drawing and painting at an early age. However, his experiments with watercolors and oil paints were not the immediate start of his career as an artist. Instead, Kandinsky began studying economics and law at the age of 19. Despite a promising offer of a lectureship, he decided against an academic career, as he was working in a Moscow print shop specializing in art reproductions at the time. Within the New Artists' Association in Munich, founded in 1909, his vision broadened and his desire for new forms of pictorial language intensified. This development was recorded by Kandinsky in his art-historical essay "On the Spiritual in Art" (1911) and in the almanac "Der Blaue Reiter" (1912), which he published together with Franz Marc.
