A trip through scent and intoxication by Katharina Kummer | world premiere
Spectacular and shrouded in legend - the launch party of the perfume OPIUM: a legend in the history of fragrances, at times banned and deliberately provocative with its proximity to the drug. Based on OPIUM, the production plays with all the senses, takes us on a trip of intoxication and fragrance experiences and questions the nature of all obsessions. Smells are said to invite good spirits, drive away demons, attract lust or keep desire at bay. People have always sought a connection with the gods through incense, perfume and embalming. Drugs promise the same. With their help, people reach for the stars and end up - mostly ungodly and close to the animal - in the dirt when the intoxication tips over into addiction.
The text of OPIUM is permeated by voices that Katharina Kummer has woven together from conversations with people who are involved in the field of intoxication and addiction from a wide variety of perspectives. Her works are created in the interplay between object and person, between cultural-historical inspiration and direct experience. Audience and performers are equally connected by a collective experience in the theater space. Mythical creatures populate the stage world and the production follows a dream logic whose structure is translated into a real world of smell by a perfumer.
