The film tells the moving story of Olfa Hamrouni and her four daughters. Rarely has a combination of documentary and re-enactment been so exciting, honest and touching.filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania accompanies Olfa Hamrouni and her four daughters as they tell their personal family story. At the beginning, it becomes clear that Olfa's eldest two daughters disappeared one day. But the question of what exactly happened to them remains unanswered for most of the film. To bridge the absence of the two older daughters, two actresses are hired to play Rhama (Nour Karoui) and Ghofrane (Ichraq Matar). Hend Sabri, a well-known actress in the Arab world, also plays Olfa whenever she feels emotionally overwhelmed. The unusual combination of documentary and re-enactment scenes makes "Olfa's Daughters" something very special in its cinematic form alone.
Highly topical, moving factual cinema that addresses important themes such as hope, rebellion, violence and sisterhood and takes the audience on a journey into a culture that is foreign to us. But the profound humanity of the story told makes it clear that even if other cultures seem worlds away, they are ultimately closer to us than we think. (Ben Hania, FR TN DE SA 2023 - FSK 12 - OmdU)
