Trombonist Tim Tooney tells the mysterious life story of his friend Danny Boodman T. D. Lemon Novecento, who was found as an infant by sailors on the Virginian, an emigrant ship traveling between Genoa and New York, in 1900. His parents, apparently poor emigrants, had abandoned him in a cardboard box on the piano of the ballroom. And so the boy grows up on the Virginian, develops into a gifted jazz pianist and enchants the audience with his virtuoso playing from then on. But Novecento has another unusual talent: he can read the eyes of the ship's passengers and sense the atmosphere of the places they have visited - as if he had been there himself. This gift is astonishing, especially as he has never left the Virginian. But after 32 years, he suddenly decides to disembark ...
