Norbert Lammert reads texts from literature and politics on the 2025 festival motto "Doubt and Cohesion"

The two terms "doubt" and "cohesion", which together form this year's motto of the Ruhr Festival, have always been addressed not only by science but also by literature and politics. Norbert Lammert is well versed in both areas, as we know from his readings at previous festivals. He was a member of the German Bundestag for almost four decades, serving as its President from 2005 to 2017 and thus holding the second-highest office of state in terms of protocol. It was not only his speeches as President of the Bundestag that earned him a great reputation far beyond party boundaries. The Society for the German Language awarded him the Jacob Grimm Prize, the only politician to date to do so.

For this reading, he has selected historical and contemporary texts that illustrate old and new experiences of doubt and cohesion - and why an enlightened, modern society needs both.
