NIEMANDSLAND: DER PREIS DES FORTSCHRITTS

In the organizer's words:

As part of the World Press Photo exhibition at the Depot, we are pleased to invite documentary photographer Daniel Chatard to a talk with photo editor and curator Cale Garrido in cooperation with the Image Section of the German Photographic Society. Chatard, winner of the World Press Photo Award for the best long-term project in Europe, will give insights into his award-winning project No Man's Land and his approach to documentary photography.

The photographer, born in Heidelberg in 1996, works at the interface between photojournalism and visual research. His work deals with power structures, collective identity and trauma. For him, landscapes become carriers of collective memories and experiences that inspire him to develop new narratives and tell human stories in the context of their environment. His studies in "Photojournalism and Documentary Photography" at the Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts and in "Photography & Society" at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague have had a strong influence on him. He works as a freelance photojournalist for media such as Die ZEIT, Der Spiegel and the Washington Post.

In conversation with Cale Garrido, Chatard will provide insights into his project No Man's Land and the creation of the accompanying photo book. The project documents the conflict surrounding lignite mining in the Rhineland, which has not only profoundly changed landscapes, but also the lives and identity of local people. Niemandsland captures the tensions between environmental, public and economic interests and sheds light on the beginning of the end of coal in the German energy sector.
