Moritz Bendit und die Kuranstalt Neufriedenheim

The mentally ill Fürth businessman Moritz Bendit (1863-1940) was a patient for over 40 years in the former Neufriedenheim sanatorium in what is now the Sendling-Westpark district of Munich. Like all Jewish institutional patients, he was doubly stigmatized and endangered by the Nazi state. At the age of 77, he was transferred to the Eglfing-Haar sanatorium and nursing home in September 1940 and deported from there, along with over 190 other Jewish patients, to the Hartheim killing center near Linz on September 20, where he suffered an agonizing death by poison gas.

His life story and that of his national-liberal, later National Socialist doctor, the psychiatrist Dr. Ernst Rehm, as well as the history of the renowned Neufriedenheim sanatorium are explored in Volume 15 of the Studies on Jewish History and Culture in Bavaria, published in 2024. The book makes an important contribution in view of the still insufficiently researched Reich-wide "euthanasia" murders, especially those of Jewish institutional patients.

After the welcome address, co-editor Dr. Andreas Heusler will introduce the academic book series. Ilse Macek (Gegen Vergessen - Für Demokratie e.V.) will introduce the topic. Author Reinhard Lampe and historian Dr. Sibylle von Tiedemann will then provide an insight into key aspects of the book and explain the historical context.

Finally, BR speaker Julia Cortis will read excerpts from the story "Die im Dunkeln" by Marieluise Fleißer, in which she processed the impressions of a three-month stay as a patient in the Neufriedenheim sanatorium in 1938 many years later.
