The topic of February's lunch break is: "The Harz Mountains as a motif in 19th century painting" with Dr. Andreas Büttner (Curator of Fine Arts, SMBS) and Heike Billerbeck (painting restorer).
The Harz Mountains, the home of the Steinweg family, became a popular destination for excursionists, recreationists and hikers in the 19th century. Thanks to the railroad, the low mountain range with its rugged natural beauty was easy to reach. Painters were also drawn to the mountains. The sketches made on site formed the basis for the landscape views that were generally created in the studio, which increasingly had to fend off competition from the increasingly inexpensive photography on offer.
Using selected examples, the tour highlights the diversity of artistic positions.
After the short, approx. 15 - 20 minute tour, participants are cordially invited to continue their discussions over a drink and a piece of cake in the cafeteria.
The lunch break is part of the exhibition "People and Pianos. Steinway & Sons | Grotrian-Steinweg".
