Program:
Ludwig van Beethoven: Missa solemnis in D major op. 123
"From the heart - may it go to the heart again" was the motto Ludwig van Beethoven wrote for his "Missa solemnis", whose monumental score broke the boundaries of church music at the time. Originally intended as service music for the enthronement of his patron Archduke Rudolph as Cardinal Archbishop, the mass setting ultimately took on dimensions that made Beethoven himself speak of one of his most successful works. As a tireless researcher of sources, René Jacobs continues to provide new food for thought with his standard-setting interpretations. As a differentiated designer, the Belgian conductor will savor the score with its radical contrasts and abundance of moods. The B'Rock Orchestra, with which he is very familiar, has mastered the art of transforming historical information and dynamic responsiveness into expressive intensity. Praised for its somnambulistic homogeneity, fascinating transparency and flexible balance, the Zurich Sing-Akademie, together with the accomplished quartet of soloists on the vocal side, guarantees a playful mastery of the enormous demands of Beethoven's monumental work.
