is the classical form of Japanese theater, created more than 600 years ago and still kept alive today. It combines acting and dance, dramatic poetry and poetry, singing and instrumental playing to create a highly refined stage art. Kyôgen spoken theater is inextricably linked to the serious Nô play as a cheerful and burlesque counterpart and intermezzo. It is mostly concerned with the comic exposure of human faults and weaknesses.

Under the direction of the renowned kyôgen performer Nomura Taichirô (Izumi School), performers from the Izumi School of Kyôgen and the Kanze School of will be making guest appearances in Europe in February 2025, performing at the Japanese Cultural Institute over two days.

The program includes two Kyôgen plays each and the Nô play Funa Benkei (Benkei on the boat). The plays largely revolve around the stories of the Heike monogatari (The Tale of the Heike). Funa Benkei is presented as a so-called Han'nô , a "half " play, in which only the second part of the play is shown on stage.

The plays will be shown with German surtitles.

Two films on the subject of Nô and Kyôgen will be shown before the performances.

Program

Kyôgen
Nasu no Yoichi no katari (The story of Nasu no Yoichi)
Kane no ne (The sound of the bell)
(as so-called Han'nô, only 2nd part)

In addition to the performance, the artists will give an introduction to the art of Nô/Kyôgen and an explanation of the pieces (consecutively interpreted).

He is the curator of the Nô stage at the "NEOLD Private House" in Yoshino, Nara Prefecture and stages modern Nô plays such as Snow White and the musical drama Daidengaku.
