Meine geniale Freundin // L’amica geniale a fumetti

Chiara Lagani recites Elena Ferrante's texts on stage in the version she created for the graphic novel she wrote together with Mara Cerri. Drawings from the book can be seen in the background, giving shape to the narrated events.

It is about the friendship between two women and their respective paths of development, about how they influence each other over decades with their feelings, life circumstances, distance and closeness. Everything develops against the backdrop of a city/world torn apart by the contradictions of the past, present and future and where clear boundaries are still being struggled for. The graphic novel focuses on the childhood and youth of the protagonists Elena and Lila and the beginning of their friendship: as a mutual provocation, the girls throw each other's doll into the deep, dark cellar of the house. When they finally dare to look for the dolls, they discover that they are no longer there. Convinced that the dreaded Don Achille has stolen them, the two girls one day find the courage together to reclaim their dolls. This encounter with the supposed fiend becomes the initiation moment for the friendship between Elena and Lila.

Fanny & Alexander is an art workshop founded in Ravenna in 1992 by Luigi de Angelis and Chiara Lagani. It produces theater performances, video and film projects, installations, performance actions, photo exhibitions, publications, conferences, seminars, festivals and reviews.

The illustrator Mara Cerri was born in Pesaro in 1978. Her illustrations include "La spiaggia di notte" by Elena Ferrante and "Il segreto" by Nadia Terranova (Mondadori). She is the illustrator of the comic adaptation of the first part of Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan saga - "L'amica geniale", published by Coconino Press. The graphic novel has been published in German by Carlsen Verlag under the title "Meine geniale Freundin".
