The actress and singer became a legend. She lived an openly bisexual life and broke existing gender roles. She was friends with Frank Sinatra, Charlie Chaplin, Ernest Hemingway and Jean Cocteau. She consistently decided against Hitler-ruled Germany and in favor of the United States.
