Mark Vernon (UK)

In the organizer's words:

Sound artist Mark Vernon (based in Glasgow) explores concepts of audio archaeology, magnetic memory and nostalgia. At the heart of his work is a fascination with the intimacy of the radio voice, environmental sounds, obsolete media and the reuse of found sounds. An extensive collection of domestic tape recordings, audio letters, dictated notes, answering machine messages and other lost voices are incorporated into his unconventional soundscapes. Vernon distills these various elements into radiophonic compositions for radio, recordings, installations and live performances.

A passionate advocate of radio as an art form, Vernon co-runs and curates Glasgow's arts radio station Radiophrenia. He is an award-winning radio producer who has produced programs internationally for stations such as Resonance FM, VPRO, Sound Art Radio, Radio Revolten, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, Radio Cona, Kunstradio, Wavefarm, Radio Art Zone, RADIA and the BBC.

His solo music projects have been released on labels such as Kye, Glistening Examples, Canti Magnetici, Flaming Pines, Misanthropic Agenda, Entr'acte, Gagarin, Calling Cards Publishing, Psyché Tropes, Granny, Persistence of Sound, Sonoris, Discrepant, 3Leaves and his own label Meagre Resource.

Mark Vernon performs regularly in event and exhibition spaces in the UK, Europe and beyond, including festivals such as Hideous Porta, Apologies in Advance, Tectonics, Counterflows, Full of Noises, Supernormal (UK), Radio Revolten (Germany), Wien Modern / Untape Me (Austria) Sonikas (Spain), LUFF, SONOHR (Switzerland), Oscillation (Belgium), Longueur d'ondes (France) and Soundtiago (Chile).
