ZauberFabrik - The MFV concert at the Zauberberg

Mandrax Queen have been caught between two stools since 2013. Too cheesy for the stoner rock community, too brute for indie hipsters. Far too loud for small clubs and too idiosyncratic for big stages. But fuck that dog - it's all about the love of music and the friendship that binds the trio together.

On their second longplayer Back to Maybe, Mandrax Queen open their chests and show their hearts. Less influenced by 80s wave bands than its predecessor Homeboy, the band establishes an extremely independent sound that thrives on dynamics, on loud-quiet contrasts, on energy and this pulsating liveliness between existential melancholy and a spirit of optimism that tickles every hair on your body. This is still alternative rock, if you like, or simply a maximally contemporary hard rock, if there is such a thing - with Frusciante licks and Morello punch, a little nod of respect in the direction of NWoBHM and a lot of attention to detail in the search for the perfect sound.
