Description:

Puccini's opera Madama Butterfly is about the tragic story of the geisha Butterfly and her marriage to the American naval officer Pinkerton. Butterfly initially marries Pinkerton in the hope of a lasting union, although he only sees her as a temporary solution and later returns to America. Three years later, Butterfly lives under the illusion that Pinkerton will return. Despite warnings from the American consul Sharpless and a marriage proposal from Yamadori, she remains faithful to her husband. When Pinkerton finally returns, he is married and wants to take their child with him. Desperate and disappointed by the truth, Butterfly finally takes her own life.
