Mean Time is a solo performance by artist Amina Szecsödy that revolves around the emancipatory potential and possible misuse of words. The protagonist of the piece, a female oracle, spins an opaque web of prophecies using language and song. The oracle herself is an ambivalent figure, oscillating between agency and self-denial: on the one hand she provides access to a future through wise prophecies, on the other she is a frantic and obsessive woman who often speaks in riddles.

The performance is a continuation of Amina Szecsödy's research into historical notions of the female* body and the female read voice, juxtaposing their exploitation and oppression with her subversive expression as a saboteur of dominant power structures. By assembling and hybridizing fragments of quotes, conversations, sounds and newspaper articles, she interrogates and twists the voices of the recent past, the immediate present and a monstrous future.

The performance is a new production and will be presented as part of Berlin Art Week 2024.

Amina Szecsödy (* 1995, SE/BE) works in the fields of theater, choreography and visual arts. In her work she uses text, sound and body to work with elements from pop culture, newspaper articles, cinema and myth-making. She edits, cuts and inserts dissonant voices and phenomena from the past and the future into the immediate present. Through this process of "subtraction", or "suction" as she calls it, Szecsödy develops new complexities and combinations of language and gestures. Szecsödy studied performing arts at the Malmö Theater Academy and completed her master's degree in choreography and performance at the University of Giessen. Her recent works and collaborations include SHIATSU (Accelerator) Shadow Text (KAAP, Kunstencentrum Buda, Fondation Perdu & ARGOS center for audiovisual arts) Mean Time (rile* books, ToR Art Space & Konträr) Operators (Künstlerhaus Mousonturm) the commissioned piece Ge mig en fast punkt och jag ska rubba jorden (Teater Västernorrland), Rear Windows (Deutsches Filminstitut Frankfurt) Echoes of you(s) (Künstlerhaus Mousonturm, Senckenberg Museum & WELD), RAUBKOPIE (Künstlerhaus Mousonturm & Thalia Theater, nominated for Körber Studio for Young Directors). Amina works with artists such as Myriam Lefkowitz, Nikima Jagudajev, Luis Garay, Eoghan Ryan and Chloe Chignell.
