The Louis Spohr Orchestra Braunschweig (LSO for short) has existed in its current form since 2004 and emerged from a Braunschweig string ensemble.
Under the direction of In-Kun Park, the orchestra has developed from a small string orchestra into a 70-piece symphony orchestra, consisting mainly of accomplished amateurs and a few professionals. However, the orchestra varies in its line-up and also performs as a chamber orchestra and in smaller ensembles. The orchestra currently gives around four concerts a year in Braunschweig and the surrounding area, in which it performs both chamber orchestra literature and large symphonic works. Renowned soloists such as Wenzel Fuchs (principal clarinettist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra), Naoko Shimizu (principal viola with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra) and various prizewinners from major competitions such as the International ARD Competition in Munich, the International Violin Competition "Joseph Joseph" in Munich and the International Violin Competition "Joseph Joseph" in Munich. International Violin Competition "Joseph Joachim" Hanover or the International Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels have already been presented to the Braunschweig audience together with the LSO. Tobias Rokahr has been the conductor of the Louis Spohr Orchestra since the 2023 spring concert.
Another focus is the promotion of young people. Talented young instrumentalists from the Braunschweig region are regularly given the opportunity to perform as soloists with the orchestra. The orchestra is also involved in regular charity concerts for social causes.
