LOOKING AT Sam Youkilis mit Marco De Mutiis und Sophia Greiff

In the organizer's words:

Language: English

In this dialogical tour, Marco De Mutiis, Digital Curator at the Fotomuseum Winterthur, and curator Sophia Greiff guide you through the first solo exhibition of photographer and filmmaker Sam Youkilis. Known for his iPhone video sequences published on Instagram, which are located at the intersection of street, travel, food and documentary photography, Youkilis' work invites us to reflect on image culture in the age of digital networking.

How does the tradition of street photography meet the aesthetics of travel influencers? To what extent is social media transforming this tradition by creating a new aesthetic economy? Together, the curators will discuss the role of reactions and comments on these images and how seductive representations linked to notions of exoticism and othering may contribute to the objectification of individuals and cultures.

Marco De Mutiis is a digital curator at Fotomuseum Winterthur in Switzerland, where he leads the museum's research on algorithmic and networked forms of image making. He leads and co-curates various projects and platforms that expand the role and space of the museum. These include the collaborative live-stream program Screen Walks (developed and co-curated with Jon Uriarte, curator of digital programs at The Photographers' Gallery in London) and the Fotomuseum's current experimental platform [permanent beta] The Lure of the Image.
