At a time of uncertainty and lack of prospects, a fascinating stranger appears in the state of Brabant. He quickly gains the trust of the masses and that of Elsa, who is accused of fratricide. The stranger blows up the trial, clears Elsa of all charges and becomes the idol of a new movement. But when Elsa asks for his name, he suddenly disappears, leaving Brabant in chaos. Richard Wagner's work, composed between 1845 and 1848, in direct historical proximity to the March Revolution, is generally regarded as the pinnacle of Romantic opera. Between pathos, great emotion and the Teutonic salvation of the world, this magical piece is not only a legendary love story, but also a parable about the search for social utopia and its failure due to humanity itself.
