Radio music

The 1920s were the founding years of radio broadcasting in Germany. The "Linie 2" program brings the time of this technical and musical breakthrough of almost 100 years ago to life. Prominent composers composed for the new medium of radio without worrying about drawing a line between serious and entertainment music. The "Radio Overture" by Pavel Haas from 1931 seems like a small radio play in which the medium itself has its say, while eleven years later, in Hanns Eisler's Klavierlied, a singer can only rescue his beloved radio set from his homeland into exile. The works by Braunfels and Toch were written at the end of the 1920s and also oscillate between styles. They were commissioned by the predecessor stations of WDR and SWR: radio history as sounding contemporary history.
