Liliom

In the organizer's words:

Liliom, a well-known town crier at the fairground, a connoisseur of the illusion machinery for the people, meets the maid Julie at the carousel and thus meets a fateful love. In their longing for a life without exploitation, they both immediately risk their jobs. Unemployed, however, Liliom feels increasingly humiliated in his social status. He finds no words for his shame, instead he lashes out and these blows hit Julie. When she becomes pregnant, the family's existential difficulties increase and Liliom is tempted by his buddy to commit a robbery. The robbery fails and Liliom stabs himself to escape disgrace and punishment. In the afterlife, however, a judgment awaits him, giving him a second chance on earth after sixteen years in purgatory. Can man change?
