Lesung mit Ralf Rothmann: 'Museum der Einsamkeit'

Ralf Rothmann presents his new stories (ET: 19.05.25) at transfer. We are delighted to welcome the award-winning author back to our bookshop after seven years.

"Every true, every luminous short story has a novel-length shadow," Ralf Rothmann once wrote and proves it again with 'Museum der Einsamkeit'. Whether he is telling of a little boy's 'stall magic', who comforts his crying brother while his parents are away, or of a lecturer who places her mother in a retirement home with strange scratch marks on the doors, whether he has a henchman despair of the masons' coldness of soul or a priest whose daughter is dying despair of God - a 'truth behind the truth' is always revealed to us, which is not least due to the resilience and magical precision of Ralf Rothmann's language.

These nine stories are about dignity or the lack of it, in which people strive to come a little closer to the ideal of a reasonably successful life - or at least not to end up looking too contrite. Some of them, "angels on crutches", are afflicted by loneliness and suspect that they do not necessarily need wings to rise above themselves and their circumstances; love would suffice. (Suhrkamp)

Ralf Rothmann was born on May 10, 1953 in Schleswig and grew up in the Ruhr area. After elementary school (and a brief visit to commercial college), he trained as a bricklayer, worked in construction for several years and then in various professions (including as a printer, nurse and cook). His work has been awarded numerous prizes. He has lived in Berlin since 1976.
