In the Face of War - European Dialogues

The role of translation in communicating Ukrainian culture

Without translation, we would live in provinces bordering on silence. This thought by philologist George Steiner reminds us of the importance of translation in the process of mutual recognition of cultures, especially in times of war. How do translators and publishers take action to break the silence created by the weakening of cultural industries in countries at war? How can Europeans contribute to this dialog that brings people closer together?

The event series In the Face of War - European Dialogues, initiated by the Institut français, deals with the effects of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on the European continent. The project focuses on the question of European narratives and their reception. After stops in Prague, Vilnius, Helsinki, Amsterdam, Sofia, Warsaw and Rennes, it is now Leipzig's turn.

With Kateryna Rietz-Rakul, Director of the Ukrainian Institute in Germany, Iryna Dmytrychyn, French translator, and Constantin Sigov, Ukrainian author.

Various events are planned at the Leipzig Book Fair and in the city on 28.03.2025.
