Percussion and piano have accompanied the life of composer Dieter Mack since the age of 9, when he began to learn the piano and played drums in his first rock band at the age of 15. It was therefore not surprising that he devoted himself to electronic music for a few years before turning almost exclusively to instrumental music from 1978 onwards. This was again triggered by percussion instruments, namely the Balinese gamelan. His interest in Balinese music and culture in particular and Indonesia in general has shaped the composer's life to this day. Anyone expecting to find diverse references to this musical culture in his music will probably be disappointed. Mack repeatedly emphasizes that it was not so much the musical language itself, but rather the way of making music that occupied him extensively. In particular, the two duos Lalangan from 1983 and Éclat from 2022 clearly show how Mack preferred a reduced, abstract style at the beginning of his exploration of Balinese music, as a conscious departure, so to speak, while over the following years he developed his own colorful and very rhetorical style, as in Éclat.
Mack's two 'former' students - Sebastian Voltz and Max Riefer (Duo les éclats du son) - each represent their own positions. Iwan Gunawan, one of Indonesia's leading gamelan composers, composes in the dynamic tradition of West Java, while Katharina Roth turns to a mysterious and spun sound world.
