Gelsomina is 14 years old and lives with her parents and three sisters in the province of Tuscany. Her father Wolfgang was once a politically left-wing idealist, but he has since turned into a patriarch whose authority is dwindling. The family struggles to keep their heads above water with a small beekeeping business. Gelsomina forges her own plan to improve the family's finances and ensure the continued existence of the farm: she wants to register the family for the TV show "Village Wonders" - even against her father's wishes.
