La Veronal: TOTENTANZ

The Dance of Death, also known as the "Danse Macabre", is an iconic motif of the Middle Ages. Death is often depicted as a bone man who comes to take the living. Accordingly, dancing with death marks a kind of exorcism against fear. A carnivalesque gesture of vitality that confronts the inevitable.

Inspired by this tradition, the Barcelona-based group La Veronal transforms the stage in Totentanz - Morgen ist die Frage into a dark, dream-like space in which myth and reality are interwoven and the boundaries between this world and the afterlife become blurred. Choreographer and director Marcos Morau has created one of his most radical works from strictly composed images and movements. Four performers carry out a peculiar ritual. With fragmented gestures, extreme postures and dynamic interactions, they explore the emotional spectrum of mortality. In the interplay of stage and costume, video and music, past and present are combined. Franz Liszt's Dance of Death is only a corner away from pounding techno beats. And the formal language of black romanticism flows into the flood of images of our political present as if of its own accord. Totentanz - Morgen ist die Frage is a multidisciplinary and immersive work in which installation, video art and live performance merge into a visually haunting and emotionally charged exploration of mortality.

Marcos Morau, who was voted Choreographer of the Year by the magazine TANZ 2023, regularly stages works at international venues and festivals such as the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris, the Biennale di Venezia, the Festival d'Avignon, Tanz im August in Berlin, Festival RomaEuropa, SIDance Festival in Seoul, Danse Danse Montreal and Sadler's Wells in London. Since 2023 he is "Artist in Residence" at the Staatsballett Berlin. He and his company La Veronal will be performing in Munich for the first time as part of the International DANCE Festival Munich.
