La Phármaco & Luz Prado und Lola Dolores: Toná

In the organizer's words:

as part of the Baila España festival

About the piece:

In Toná, a multifaceted friction arises between the dancer Luz Arcas and the musicians Luz Prado and Lola Dolores. Luz Arcas, an established figure in contemporary dance in Spain as La Phármaco, returns to the Andalusian folk dance of her childhood. Inspired by the "verdiales", a folk music and dance tradition typical of Málaga that predates flamenco, she and the musicians transform its melodies and rhythms into contemporary dance. Death as a celebration of life: dance becomes an individual and collective catharsis, an acknowledgement of life, even in pain, even in emotion, in complete freedom.

"Toná is the poetry of the flesh that transmits the pulse of life, full of anger and joy, but also full of prejudice and superstition. An ancient and fertile pain that, from childhood, gradually makes us what we are. Toná seeks the dance in the body, not the virtuous dance of trained bodies, but dance as human dignity, dance that allows us to stomp on the ground with all our might. The most beautiful anger, the most open wound."
Luz Arcas
