A scene full of melancholy and sadness: the gold diggers in Puccini's opera La fanciulla del west, based on David Belasco's drama The Girl of the Golden West, show no sign of their hope for riches. The bitter reality: bleak working-class life. They struggle to scrape together a little gold - too much to die, too little to live. Only Minnie, the only woman in the camp and barmaid and authority figure in one, is able to spread a little comfort and affection. She too longs for the one and only pure love. But the mysterious newcomer harbors a dark secret. He is the captain of a brutal band of robbers with a bounty on his head. In such an inhospitable world, is it possible to leave one's past behind, start anew or even obtain forgiveness? And Puccini uses advanced, highly emotional sound dramaturgy to bring the opera to a head with the question of what is stronger: justice or love?
