This is one of the most famous sentences in literary history: "I'd rather not." - the refrain of Melville's cult book "Bartleby" from 1853, spoken by the very same Bartleby, the clerk who responds to all his boss's demands and offers with "I prefer not to" without any justification. In Melville's story, the setting is an office. But now imagine that this sentence is spoken in an average bedroom between two average, attracted people, one of whom is looking for physical closeness. Many people will have experienced this situation and its consequences in different ways and from different positions. It rarely results in something that strengthens the relationship. But why not?
This is one of the questions that Beate Absalon asks in her redemptive and wonderfully free-thinking book "Not giving a fuck". The feminist literary collective "Liquid Center" asks a different question, namely: What happens when 18 authors from several generations discuss sex and sexuality in the large collective work "Wir kommen"? Maria-Christina Piwowarski brings the writers Verena Güntner, Clara Umbach and Beate Absalon into conversation after a reading performance: about desire and reluctance, wanting to come but not being able to, and being able to come but not wanting to. An evening where you can laugh out loud and whose necessity is truly unquestionable.
