Klimastreik zur Bundestagswahl

Fridays for Future Leipzig is joining over 140 other cities in calling for a climate strike ahead of the federal elections. The climate movement is needed - more than ever. The 1.5 degree limit was exceeded for the first time in 2024. Donald Trump withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement with the USA and the majority of the remaining member states did not submit a plan to the UN on how they intend to reduce their emissions by 2035 (L1). The Expert Council on Climate Change also considers the German climate targets for 2030 to be difficult to achieve; Germany would have to double its efforts in the area of climate protection (L2).

"While the candidates for chancellor argue about mass deportations and border closures, our planet continues to boil every day. The fact that global warming is one of the main reasons for people fleeing their own country is being completely ignored in current debates," says climate activist Alexander Hilse from Fridays for Future Leipzig. In 2023 alone, around 26.4 million people had to leave their homes due to climate disasters such as continuous rainfall, droughts, heatwaves and storms. (L3) "The priorities in the election campaign are completely wrong. Everyone deserves a future worth living and climate change does not stop at national borders," adds Anabell Franke from Fridays for Future Leipzig. In order to put the issue of climate protection back on the public agenda and hold the parties to account, the activists from Fridays for Future are calling for a strike together with numerous other Leipzig groups.

The strike will take place this Friday, February 14, 2025, at 3 pm and will start at Bayrischer Bahnhof. The demonstration will start with a few speeches, then run around the inner city ring road and end back at the starting point. Where the
