It was supposed to be a happy day for siblings Anders, Winni, Oskar and Bertram, as their father Michael is released from prison. But as soon as the family is happily reunited, the bailiff is at the door: they have to leave the apartment immediately because of high rent debts! This gives the mother, exhausted by night shifts and money worries, the rest, she collapses and is ordered to take absolute rest. The others first stay with Uncle Georg, whose crooked dealings with smuggled cigarettes had landed Michael in prison.

While Michael tries in vain to find work, Georg has already worked out how to get the money he urgently needs: the siblings are to kidnap Bernhard, the rich banker's son. The four of them agree immediately because they want to help their father - but of course he can't find out about it. A costume party at the estate where Bernhard lives alone with the butler is the opportunity. After a few teething troubles, the coup succeeds - and Bernhard is delighted: he's never had so much fun as with Bertram and his siblings! Unfortunately, the long-suffering butler senses his chance to capitalize on the harmless kidnapping. And then everything gets out of hand: Michael gets involved, the police arrest the whole "kidnapping gang" and Bernhard's father doesn't believe his son that the butler is the culprit. Once again, the children have to improvise.
