Katja Šulc

DE: Katja Šulc is a Slovenian singer, songwriter and musician who weaves together poetry, contemporary folk music, traditional heritage, endangered cultures and disappearing languages.

After studying music at the New School in New York (Jazz & Contemporary Music Program), she released five studio albums: Mila (2008), Twisted Delight (2013), Kamlisajlan - Homage to Roma Poetry (2016), Caricias (2021) and West Wind Blow From Your Prairie Nest (2024), which was nominated for the German Record Critics' Award.

Her solo performances combine voice, ukulele and sample loops, embedded in sound effects, spoken word, storytelling and improvisation. Her repertoire includes contemporary, ancient and indigenous poetry, tribal incantations, animal sounds and newly arranged traditional songs from the Balkans to Latin America.

Katja Šulc is the recipient of several fellowships, including the CEC ArtsLink Fellowship (2020-2022), which supported her artist residency at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in New Mexico. She has presented her music regionally and internationally, from Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Morocco to Turkey, Nepal, China, USA, Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia and Brazil.

Her repertoire includes contemporary, ancient, and indigenous poetry, tribal invocations and animal calls, as well as rearranged traditional songs ranging from the Balkans to Latin America.
