In the organizer's words:

The historic Böttcherstraße was once one of the most important connecting routes between the Rhine - sorry: Weser - and the market square. And it is precisely in this famous street that you will find us in Haus St. Petrus, which was built in 1923-26 as a restaurant. In its small-scale architecture with bay windows, gables and arcades, it combines the English country house style with traditional Hanseatic elements. And in addition to Bremen specialties, we offer Rhenish dishes and of course Kölsch beer in our StäV... and of course the Rhenish way of life and here it is important to show the cool north what it means to celebrate Rhenish!

On 11.11. the Permanent Representation Bremen - StäV traditionally celebrates the carnival kick-off with DJ TODDY - admission 17:11 / start 18:11...

The official start of the annual carnival season is 11.11. at 11:11 am. In many carnival strongholds, this time is celebrated in a big way and the carnival revelers and jesters toast each other as they usually only do on New Year's Eve, when the old year ends at midnight and the new year arrives. After this official start to the carnival season, however, things quiet down for a while and the active carnival celebrations only take place after Three Kings' Day on January 6. So why wasn't a date in January chosen for the start of carnival? The explanation is quite simple and has something to do with the mysticism of numbers, which have always fascinated mankind.

The entire carnival season, from 11.11 to Ash Wednesday, actually contains many stages that symbolize the whole of human existence. There is the change of seasons from fall to winter, the quiet and contemplative Advent season, during which people sometimes fast. Christmas and the winter solstice represent the high points of divine becoming. And finally, at the end of the carnival season, the great parades and celebrations are the glamorous climax, after which people immediately enter the quiet fasting period. However, this alone cannot justify the beginning of the foolish season on this particular date.

So let's delve further into the mysticism of numbers. Humans are largely oriented towards numbers, which follow rhythms of 10. The number 10 plays a role in many legends, and even more so in the Christian church. Symbolically, the number 10 stands for perfection, the rounded whole. There are the 10 commandments, 10 sins and even biblical punishments often refer to the number 10. In other areas, too, the number 10 has always played a major role, as has the payment of the 10th share as a tax. Even physically, the number 10 is considered perfect, as humans have 10 fingers and toes. Wherever we look, the number 10 has a formative meaning. Symbolically, it is royally perfect. The next meaningful number after it is 12, which is also considered a perfect number. This is how you count the dozen, which contains 12 parts. 12 months and at the 12th hour of the night, the old day ends and the new one begins.

The number 11 is neither round nor can it be divided. It is higher than 10 and is therefore considered an exaggeration, gluttony and excess. Nevertheless, it does not have the power to end the old and begin the new, as the 12 does.

It is therefore a foolish number that is not subject to any mathematical law or regularity. It was precisely these characteristics that formed the basis of carnival. The festivities, which can be described as the ancestors of today's carnival, are characterized by the fact that everything that was usually serious and important to people was turned upside down at this time. Servants were served by masters, men and women slipped into the garments of the opposite sex, everything that had to be reversed was reversed. As long as it didn't get serious. The number 11 was therefore predestined to symbolically herald the beginning of time.

For us today, 11 is usually a number like any other. There is nothing good or bad about it and it is part of our number system. For people in past centuries, however, it had the same symbolic power as many other numbers. Perhaps people used it to create a certain stability for themselves, or perhaps it was just simple superstition. For us, however, 11 has remained the number of fools and that is why we celebrate the beginning of the fool's season every year on 11.11. at 11:11 am.
