Estonia, the northernmost and smallest of the three Baltic countries, is famous for its singing tradition: from the song festival in Tallinn, the world's largest event for amateur choirs, to the inclusion of Estonian choral music as an intangible world cultural heritage by UNESCO, to vocalists such as Maarja Nuut. Born out of a defiant affirmation of its own identity, Estonia having been a pawn of other nations for centuries, singing has become a reflection of a country that now looks to the future with liberation and self-confidence. This self-image as a "singing nation", rooted in tradition but at the same time looking to the future, comes to mind when listening to one of the country's brightest singing stars: the charismatic singer, songwriter and pianist Kadri Voorand.

On her ACT debut "In Duo with Mihkel Mälgand", Voorand passionately creates a large-scale sound painting. Her enormous spectrum ranges from acoustic folk-pop, R&B and electro to vocal jazz and onomatopoeic improvisation.

The real Kadri Voorand, however, can be heard in a duo with Mihkel Mälgand, a sought-after bassist who has already played with Nils Landgren, Dave Liebman and Kurt Elling and won the Danish Jazz Award last year. Thanks to their long collaboration, which has already been presented and intensified at many international festivals - Mälgand co-composed and arranged some of the songs for the new album - the two are perfectly attuned to each other. A duo on the way to the vocal sound of the 21st century.
